Another Milestone: The Alibi Room 200th
I remember there was a time when a new change-up in the Alibi Room’s draught lineup was newsworthy of being posted on this blog. Those then became such a regular occurrence that even Nigel couldn’t keep up with posting copies of his new draught menu to his own Web site. Now we are lucky to get the occasional tweet, warning us of the odd noteworthy beer going on tap.
On December 3, 2009, the Alibi Room celebrated its 100th tap list with a party that has become legend amongst local craft beer nerds and brewers alike, not least of which was Nigel’s souvenir the beer geek’s guide to the Alibi’s 100th beer list. A shade over a year later, and three and a half years after this ball got rolling, it’s time to toast the 200th:
The Alibi’s 200th Beer List
December 22, 2010, 5:00pm
157 Alexander Street, Vancouver
Howe Sound has brewed a special 10% ABV Megadestroyer Imperial Licorice Stout for the occasion that will be served on custom leather coasters hand made by local craftsman, Ken Diamond. The coasters and Megadestroyer t-shirts will be available for purchase during the event. A limited bottle release of Megadestroyer Imperial Licorice Stout will be offered at better Lower Mainland beer & wine stores.
Food will be served, compliments of the Alibi Room, to those who bring non-perishable food items for donation to the food bank. (Give and ye shall receive!) And returning for an encore from the 100th, is local bluesman extraordinaire, Rich Hope, to entertain us from on high. Hopefully, he’ll play us I See Trouble.
Of course that’s not all. There will be plenty more casks and kegs that represent the best of the best from our local craft brewing heroes, such as:
- 2009 Oud Bruin by Iain Hill, Yaletown Brewing
- 2009 Pothole Filler Imperial Stout by Franco Corno, Howe Sound
- 2010 Old Cellar Dweller Barley Wine by Jason Meyer, Driftwood
- Alibi Dungeon Aged Barley Wine by Derrick Franche, Brewhouse at Whistler
- The Grand Imperial Espresso Stout by Conrad Gmoser, Steamworks
- The Roach IPA by Gary Lohin, Central City
- Thor’s Hammer Barley Wine by Gary Lohin, Central City
Note: Driftwood’s 2010 Old Cellar Dweller is a one-off cask only available at this event! Thor’s Hammer won “Beer of the Year” at the 2010 Canadian Brewing Awards, which also recognized Central City as this year’s “Brewery of the Year.”
This is bound to be a popular event. If you don’t manage to make it in the door, give Guilt & Co. at 1 Alexander a visit for their Tapping Solstice celebration. They are hosting an inaugural cask night, featuring Russell’s A Wee Angry Scotch Ale tapped at 6:30pm. Their Black Death Porter will then be tapped at 7:30pm. Paired cheeses will be served with each cask and there will be a jam session on the stage to entertain you.
